The Elephant Bathroom

Unfortunately I do not have before pictures, so a textual description will have to suffice. The bathroom was in very bad condition. The plaster walls were crumbling, the bathtub was not in working condition, and the floors were carpet(!). We did a complete rip-out and replace. It took a while, but it was worth it. We still need to do a few things, like find a window shade that fits the window and some other minor things.

Hot on the heels of the new dining room: Third Floor Bathroom

Currently our third floor bathroom is ripped down to the studs. I’ll post before and after pictures when it is finished, but until then here is a video of my brother and I sledgehammering a cast iron bathtub.

Now we just need to finish furnishing it!

Lesson #1 of Kitchen Building

Wiring a kitchen from scratch is expensive as hell (~$10,000, yikes!).

It looks the new kitchen is not going to happen for a while since that is more than half of our budget and I do not even want to know how much the plumber will charge to run gas and water lines. We are going to improve some other things in the rest of the house this summer instead. The guest bedroom is almost done. It needs to be repainted and re-floored. I should get to that this week. I will put up photos, of course, when it is all finished.

Made a temporary workbench

I converted an old cupboard into a workbench. This was the first time I used a powered saw. Pretty scary at first, but I told myself that if I just concentrated and stayed in control everything would be fine… and it was! It is almost perfectly level as well. I used some scrap wood from the part I cut off to reinforce the sides.

Renovations set to begin May 22nd

All of my time and brain power has been taken up with work and grad school. The semester ends May 10th for me. I plan to get working on the house right after. I am going to start by finishing up the living room. I need to throw a second coat of paint up and put in some built in bookcases next to the fireplace. That will require a new power tool: circular saw! Mwahhhhahahhaaa.

After the living room is finished I want to get our new kitchen going. I have an idea of what I want to do, but I need to find out what my options are for plumbing, power, and gas placement in the room.

Fixed the faux fire place.

Still need to refinish the trim piece, but otherwise looking good.

We are in the new house!

We finished most of the patching, sanding, and painting done before me moved. When we pulled the ugly wood paneling off the plaster underneath was not in too good of shape. We are going to pull it all out eventually I think and hang Sheetrock. That is a bit far off, but at least we are all moved in.

I am just now realizing how huge this house is. Currently our cat is occupying the entire 3rd floor. Banjo loves it here. I think the apartment was just a little too small for him. He spent the first few days sniffing everything. Now I can’t find him most of the time, except when he is hungry of course. Oh, and at night. He has taken a liking to sleeping on my feet at the end of our bed.

My brother and I are going to repair the the front room in the bottom floor next. That room was going to be the man cave, but I think the man cave will actually be in the middle room on the second floor. Look for pictures at the end of the weekend.

Move has been delayed…

The movers never showed up at our agreed upon day and time. I hired a different company for tomorrow.

The cat and the wife, as well as (most of) the computers and guitars are at the new house. I am sitting in a lonely packed up apartment with only my school books to keep me company.
